Flannel shirt dress
Continuing the 90’s trend list I combined the flannel shirt with plaid skirt in my plaid flannel shirt dress.
As you already know I like history and fashion history is on my top 5 list after the history of the political theories and the political thinking so short lesson of flannel, plaid and tartan today.
Let’s start by explaining the difference between flannel, plaid and tartan.
Tartan is a Scottish unique pattern used by different Scottish clans.
Plaid as we know it, is here thanks to the British manufacturers for placing the fabric in high esteem among the royal court. Making the leap from UK to US during the 19th century, plaid gained popularity among lumberjacks with the red and black checkers pattern.
Flannel is not a pattern, it’s a fabric made either from carded wool or worsted yarn.
In a former article I wrote about how overalls made their way to be a fashion piece from a simple working class cloth. The same thing happens with flannel shirt when Hamilton Carhartt decided to set a standard of excellence for its clothes made especially for working class.
The female version of the shirt appeared as a result of a competition between the Pendleton clothing company and a small town Cedar Spring who decided to produce its on red flannel.
So with years, a simple pattern on a very comfortable fabric becomes from working attire a fashion trend. The 90’s trend is attributed to the grunge movement. If for my father this trend was associated with truck drivers, for me it will always be related with the plaid flannel shirt worn by Curt Cobain and Axl Rose 🙂
Now getting back to present days. Let me introduce you to my lovely plaid flannel shirt dress but before remember I like flannel shirt and I love plaid skirt, see my article about them here and here .
Although I’m not a big fan of anything that is two in one, I grew to love flannel shirt dress by imagining I’m wearing my husband’s way too big plaid button-down shirt. I’m saying “way too big” due to the fact that Jeff wears fitted shirts and I’m not wearing extremely short dresses 🙂
Enough with all the talk, here is my cute woven button-down shirt dress crafted from plaid print throughout and with dual button closure and curve hem or the short version plaid flannel shirt dress.
